What exactly is a dynamic tariff?
With a traditional energy contract, you pay a fixed price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) that often remains unchanged for months. With a dynamic tariff, it works completely differently. You do not pay a fixed price, but a rate that changes every hour (or every quarter).
This price is directly linked to the actual wholesale market (the EPEX Spot exchange). Is there a lot of power generation and little demand on a sunny or windy afternoon? Then the electricity price on the exchange can drop significantly or even become negative. Is the whole country cooking in the evening and charging the car at the same time? Then the price rises at those moments.
In short: you pay exactly the price that electricity costs on the market at that precise moment, including your energy supplier's fixed margins and network costs.
How does that work?
As of recently, you can choose a dynamic energy contract. This way, you pay the actual market price per hour, and you are rewarded when you consume electricity at times when there is an abundance of (green) energy.
Hourly rates tailored to you
Your energy costs are recalculated every hour based on actual market prices (EPEX Spot) instead of a fixed rate.
Supply & demand
Do you turn on the dishwasher or charge the car during times of overproduction? Then you pay extremely low or sometimes even negative prices.
Smart steering & saving
By being more conscious of your energy consumption — such as shifting heavy users to the cheap hours in the afternoon or at night — you can significantly lower your energy bill.

Smart charging stations:
Many charging stations can, using an EMS system, decide to only charge when market prices are low.
This way, your car will only start charging when there is an abundance of solar energy, whether produced by your own home or not, or at night when the demand for energy has decreased.
Home batteries:
- With a home battery in combination with a dynamic contract, you can also consume electricity with peace of mind during more expensive moments. The battery automatically charges during the cheaper hours — such as at night or on sunny afternoons — when market prices are lowest. This allows you to make the most of the most favorable hourly rates.
- Do you also have solar panels? Then in the summer, the battery largely charges for free with your own excess solar energy.
